A Brief History of the Masjidu Ahlis Sunnah

The Islamic Center of America, Masjidu Ahlis Sunnah, Madrasatu Ahlis Sunnah and Maktabatu Ahlis Sunnah were founded in 1981, under the leadership of Imam Ahmad Burhani, as The Islamic Center of East Orange, Masjid Rawdatullaah, for the sole purpose of providing the Muslims with a place to worship Allaah. Two short years later the small Muslim community had already outgrown the modestly rented storefront at 239 Central Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey.

Humbly attempting to please Allaah the Muslims purchased a 5,000 square foot building at 61 Lincoln Street, East Orange, New Jersey, to more than adequately provide enough room to accommodate the growth of Islam in East Orange, New Jersey and the increase in Muslims in and around the surrounding areas.

Then, in 1997 the Muslims acquired a 66,686 sq. ft. facility on one and a half acres to house a complete Islamic Center that would satisfy all the religious needs of the Muslims. The Masjid, which is over 19,000 sq. ft., holds over 3,500 believers and is one of the largest in the country, if not the largest. The Center is open all day, every day, for all of the five Salaah and Jumu’ah, classes, etc.

For many years here in America, the barrier of not knowing the Arabic language, no connection to the people of knowledge and the lack of credible sources on Islam written in English caused misinformation and incorrect knowledge to spread amongst the Muslims here in particular and in the West in general.

Then, by the decree of Allaah and His infinite wisdom, He allowed the knowledge of the Qur’an and the Sunnah with the practice of the first three outstanding generations to finally reach the Muslims in America. In light of this unadulterated understanding of Islam a few communities began to correct their beliefs and purify their practices. The Islamic Center of America, Masjidu Ahlis Sunnah and Madrasatu Ahlis Sunnah, is one such community, Inshaa Allaah.

This correct methodology of understanding and practicing Islam is known as the way of As Salaf As Saalih (The Righteous Predecessors). It is upon this methodology that the Islamic Center of America Masjidu Ahlis Sunnah and Madrasatu Ahlis Sunnah were established; and it is from that basis that we derived the characteristic Ahlus Sunnah. This is the understanding of Islam that we affiliate ourselves with and this is the understanding that we give da’wah to. So, Let The Sunnah Go Forth, And Don’t Stop It! Oh Allaah, make us from Ahlus Sunnah.
